Parish contribution to Syria and the Philippines

untitledBishop Kieran O’Reilly invited the people of the Diocese to be as generous as possible in supporting the emergency Trócaire collection being taken up at all Masses in the Diocese for The Philippines and Syria on 16-17 November 2013.

The damage from Typhoon Haiyan is catastrophic. Caritas Philippines estimate that over 10,000 people have been killed and 600,000 have been displaced from their homes. The United Nations estimate that almost 10 million people have been affected.

Bishop Kieran O’Reilly is encouraging the people of the Diocese to be as generous as possible.  “Our support for our brothers and sisters in such great need is an essential expression of our faith. Trócaire will be working closely with many Irish Missionaries working in the region to provide aid for the most afflicted people.”

To date the parish community in Kildysart have contributed €2,219.69 to this special appeal.

Builders of Hope – Diocesan Plan

Builders of Hope – Pastoral Plan Diocese of Killaloe 2013-2020 will guide the work of our diocese and our parishes during the next seven year.  The title is taken from the words of Pope Francis ‘Don’t be scared.  Dare to have fabulous plans.  I encourage you to not  be afraid to dream,  to have great ideals,  to be builders of hope.’ The plan is the fruit of the listening process that took place in our diocese over the last two years.

Bishop Kieran O Reilly will launch the plan for our cluster of parishes on Monday 25 November at 8pm in Bellbridge House Hotel, Spanish Point. Fr Brendan Quinlivan will present the main points of the plan at the launch. Everybody interested in the future of our Church and faith is welcome to attend the launch.

This is the homepage of the Parish of Kildysart – part of the Diocese of Killaloe. We are located in South Clare on the shore of the Shannon estuary. Our parish is centred on St Michael’s Church and is a vibrant community.  Somebody once described a parish as a “family of families” and that description certainly sits well with us here in Kildysart.  People are supportive of each other and the good of the community is central to daily parish life.

Our site is intended to be a source of information about our parish for locals and visitors alike. We hope that you may find these pages informative and supportive. We welcome your suggestions.

Mission Sunday 20 October 2013

Mission Sunday 2013

This year we celebrate mission Sunday on Sunday 20 October 2013.

The theme chosen for this year is ‘Growing in Faith’. In his message for Mission Sunday Pope Francis reminds us that ‘A Christian community shows maturity when it professes the faith, celebrates it with joy during the liturgy, lives charity, proclaims the Word of God endlessly. It leaves the security of the familiar to taker the faith ‘out there’ especially to people who have not had the opportunity to know Christ’.

Mission Sunday is an opportunity for us to pray for and support our missionaries ,especially those from our own parish and diocese and commit urselves anew to share our faith.

Bishop Kieran O’Reilly discusses the missions in this video.

Canon Island Mass 17 August 2013

Canons’ Island in the Shannon estuary is part of the parish of Kildysart. It is the largest in a cluster of over twenty islands that occupy the expansive stretch of water formed by the confluence of the Shannon and Fergus estuaries.

The island is the site of a medieval Monastery and a traditional pilgrim site for people on both sides of the estuary. The Canons Regular of St Augustine who lived in the Abbey provided pastoral care for the nearby parishes until its suppression during the rule of Henry VIII. An article, by Michael Mac Mahon, detailing the  history of the Abbey may be found on the website of Clare Library.

While the island are no longer inhabited, several of them continue to serve as pasture for cattle.

The island has continued to serve as a place of burial up to the present.  In 1990 the late Fr Michael Hillery, PP revived the tradition of going on pilgrimage to the Canons’ Island   A large number of pilgrims travel to the island now for the annual Mass. This year due to Clare’s participation in the All Ireland Hurling semi-final, the pilgrimage will take place on a Saturday. Mass will be celebrated in the ruins of the old Monastery on Saturday 17 August 2013. Boats will leave Crovraghan Pier at 1pm.

This year the pilgrimage will involve all three parishes that form the Radharc na nOilean cluster (Kildysart, Coolmeen-Cranny, and Ballynacally-Lissycasey).
