The Feast of the Epiphany 6 January 2015
The Feast of the Epiphany Tuesday,
6 January 2015
Vigil Mass (Monday 5 January) St Benedict’s Church, Coolmeen 7pm
St Mary’s Church, Cranny Tuesday, 9.45am
St Michael’s Church, Kildysart Tuesday, 11am
The Feast of the Epiphany (the word means “manifestation”) celebrates the making known of God the Son as a human being in Jesus Christ. The feast commemorates the visit of the Three Kings (the Magi) to the Baby Jesus and the revelation Jesus’ birth beyond the Jewish world. The Kings brought gifts of gold (for a king), frankincense (for worship) and myrrh (for embalming, since Christ was to die for us). In Italy and other countries children receive gifts on this day. Traditionally in Ireland, the day was known as ‘Nollaig na mBan’ as it was the day when women celebrated Christmas.

Bishop Kieran named as Archbishop of Cashel and Emly
The Holy Father, Pope Francis has today appointed Bishop Kieran O’Reilly SMA as Archbishop of Cashel and Emly in succession to Archbishop Dermot Clifford who submitted his resignation on completion of his 75th year of age. It is expected that Bishop Kieran will be installed as Archbishop in the Cathedral of the Assumption, Thurles early in 2015.
Commenting on his appointment Bishop O’Reilly said that he is accepting this appointment and looking forward to serving all of the people of the Diocese of Cashel and Emly. “I look forward to getting to know all those with whom I will be working so that we can strive together to build up a faith community that lives the joy of the Gospel
One of the consequences of my acceptance of this appointment is that I must now leave the Diocese of Killaloe where I have served as Bishop for over four years. In that time I have been privileged to work and serve with a deeply committed group of priests and people. I have encountered so many people with a great love for Jesus Christ and commitment for the life of the Church. I will always treasure the personal friendships I have made and give thanks to God for the support I have received here in the Diocese of Killaloe. I pledge to keep all of you in my prayers and gently request that you might do the same for me as I take up this new appointment.
A new appointment brings with it new challenges but with the support of all those who will collaborate with me in my ministry in Cashel and Emly I know that we will rise to meet those challenges. My first task will be to come to know the Archdiocese, its people, its religious and its priests. It will be my privilege to share in their lives of faith and to listen to their concerns so that together we might grow in faith, in hope and in love.
I would like to take this opportunity to express my appreciation for the warm welcome I have received from Archbishop Clifford, to thank him for almost 30 years of devoted service to this faith community and to pray God’s blessing on him for a long and happy retirement.”

Prayer by Cardinal Newman
May He support us all the day long,
till the shades lengthen and the evening comes,
and the busy world is hushed,
and the fever of life is over,
and our work is done.
Then in His mercy may He give us a safe lodging,
and a holy rest and peace at the last.

Anniversary of the Foundation of the Columban Sisters in Cahercon
The Missionary sisters of St Columban were founded in Cahercon, Kildysart in February, 1922 and received Papal approval in 1924. As we celebrate the 90th anniversary of the establishment of the Columban Sisters we remember all the sisters, many of them from Kildysart and the surrounding parishes who left Cahercon and went to China to preach the Gospel.
Fr Peadar O’Loughlin, who is a member of the Missionary Society of St Columban, will speak at 11am Mass in Kildysart on Sunday 28 September 2014 on the Sisters, their work and links with Kildysart. He also wishes to convey the Sisters’ thanks to the people of Kildysart for their support over the last 90 years.
The Sisters were founded by Frances Owen-Lewis. She was born in Marylebone, London, England in April 17, 1873, one of a family of six. Her father had an estate at Inishkeen, Co. Monaghan and for a time was M.P. for Carlow. In 1897 she married Captain Sir Alfred Moloney K.C.M.G., Governor of the Windward Islands and later Governor of Trinidad, West Indies. He suffered from ill-health and when they were in Italy in 1913 he became seriously ill and died in hospital. While grieving for him, Frances had an audience with Pope Pius X who assured her that God would comfort her in his own way. Read the rest of this entry
